This seminar will start with a general introduction to the topic of discrimination. We will read and discuss texts on topics such as oppression, bias, stereotypes and heuristics. Moreover, we will explore the concept of intersectionalism which may help to understand specific instances of discrimination. In a second step, we will then relate the previously discussed theories and concepts to the domain of AI. Looking at different examples of discrimination by AI systems (e.g. through chatbots and voice assistants) we will discuss why they may be especially prone to discriminatory practices.
