The development of quantum computers is considered one of the greatest scientific and technological challenges of our time. This block lecture provides an elementary introduction to the topic of quantum computing. The main physical and mathematical concepts behind this development will be elaborated and the operation of a quantum computer will be illustrated using simple algorithms. In addition, the possibilities of this technology will be critically examined and the most important technological hurdles will be discussed.
