Thomas Nagel is one of the most influential contemporary philosophers. His main thesis is that there are two fundamental perspectives that cannot be avoided by human beings: The subjective perspective of being a particular person inside the world and the objective view of that world, including the subjective perspective on it. No perspective can be reduced to the other, and a number of philosophical problems can be fruitfully discussed under this assumption: The mind-body problem, the problem of reality and our knowledge of it, the problems of freedom, value, ethics and the meaning of life. In this seminar, we will read and discuss texts about all of these topics. This course is an intensive seminar (6 credits). The exact course requirements will be discussed in the first meeting.
